Balestier Press is an independent publishing house founded in Singapore, with a strong focus on world literature and translations from Asia. Our editorial vision is to uncover underrepresented voices, bridge cultural divides, and foster dialogue through the written word. We champion works that challenge dominant narratives and highlight overlooked perspectives, particularly from East and Southeast Asia.
We publish literary fiction, narrative nonfiction, and critical essays that explore themes of identity, migration, memory, and modernity. Translation lies at the heart of our mission, and we collaborate closely with translators and authors to ensure authenticity and nuance in every work.
Our readership includes globally minded readers, academics, and literary communities seeking diverse, thought-provoking literature. We are committed to publishing both established and emerging voices, with a strong interest in debut authors whose work may not yet have found a platform in English.
Balestier Press titles have received international recognition, including English PEN awards, and are increasingly featured in academic courses and cultural programming worldwide. Representative authors include Singaporean writers such as Soon Ai Ling, Yeo Wei Wei, Liang Wern Fook, Christina Ng, Chia Joo Ming, Sim Wai Chew, Anupa Roy, Yeng Pway Ngon, Jeremy Tiang, and A. K. Kulshreshth—authors whose works speak to contemporary issues while remaining rooted in distinct literary traditions.
We believe literature is a powerful tool for empathy and understanding. Our goal is to create a platform where stories from Asia can reach a global readership, encouraging cross-cultural reflection through the act of reading.
